Can you make an egg float?

15 09 2010

Try this simple experiment to learn about density. All you need is a glass, an egg and salt.

Fill up the glass so that there is enough water to clearly cover an egg. Make a note of how much water you used. Place the egg in the glass to see if it floats.

Next, experiment stirring tablespoons of salt into the water and seeing if it floats. How much salt do you need to add before the egg will not sink to the bottom?

The salt makes the water denser, allowing the egg to float. An object floats when it is less dense than the liquid. What happens when you put a marble in the saltwater? Does this mean it is more or less dense than an egg?
