Drumming Made Easy!

27 03 2011

After our friends at Honk! TX visited the museum, we thought it would be a lot of fun to make our own instrument – a drum.

First, we gathered all of the supplies we needed. For your drum, you will need:

  • an old oatmeal can with its lid (but any can with a lid will do)
  • paint and paint brushes or construction paper
  • yarn
  • glue
  • scissors
  • any other decorations you want for your drum

We decided to paint our drum blue. If you don’t want to use paint, you can always glue construction paper to the can.

If you are painting, don't forget to add a second coat!

After we painted the can blue, we painted the lid and the bottom of the drum yellow.

Now, it is time to decorate the rest of your drum! We used glitter and glued buttons and beads onto our drum.

Now, it’s time to play your drum. You can use spoons from your kitchen or even your own hands!

If you want to make your drum more like a marching band drum, cut one tiny hole in the lid of the can and another one at the bottom of the can. Then, run a string of yarn or ribbon through them and tie the drum around your neck.

Now, you’re ready to start your own band!
